US Open: Sampras and Agassi!

Well, I look forward to the US Open finals tomorrow, as it’s Sampras vs Agassi (just like old times!).

Sampras’ revival at this tournament is the stuff of legends. Not only has he gone 33 events without a win after taking his record-breaking 13th Slam title at the 2000 Wimbledon, but he was a virtual non-factor all summer. But after reuniting with his long-time coach, Paul Annacone, and discussing his state of mind with his now pregnant wife, actress Brigitte Wilson, Sampras was able to pick himself off the canvas. […]

It aires from 3-6pm CST on CBS and if you’d like to get together for some tennis-watching, just let me know :).

Cottage Cheese & Fruit?

While I had my mid-afternoon yogurt (a fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt, as I have every day), one of my cow-orkers suggested that I could try those cottage-cheese-and-fruit combos (for instance, “Cottage Doubles”). At 150 Calories and 12g protein each, they’re pretty healthy — though it’s fair to say that yogurt is generally healthy to begin with ;).

Has anyone tried these, and are they any good? I may just buy a couple, but they cost about twice as much as those little yogurts ($1 instead of about 50¢). And, I’m a bit concerned when Kraft’s press release says that “it satisfies you without weighing you down” — could that just marketing-speak to say that they’re not filling?

Trans Fat on Labels

I’m pleased that the FDA has chosen to require including trans fat on food labels. Trans fat &mdash “about as bad as bad gets” — is the kind of fat that is processed so that it will stay solid at room temperature:

Trans fat is very effective in keeping cakes moist, cookies fresh and crunchy, and crackers crisp. It is also one of the worst things you can eat! According to many nutrition experts — and now a long-awaited federal report from the National Academy of Sciencestrans fat in food is about as bad as bad gets.

So, it looks like the FDA will require trans fat on labels by “FY 2003”.

A National Academy of Sciences’ (NAS’) Institute of Medicine report confirming that trans fatty acids contribute to heart disease and obesity has prompted the FDA to hasten efforts to require trans fat on food labels by the end of fiscal year 2003, according to an FDA official. The long-anticipated July 10 report — which likely will form the backbone of FDA’s trans fat labeling policy — concluded that there is no safe level of trans fat in a diet and urged consumers to minimize its consumption.

New Hard Drives from Maxtor

As mentioned on Slashdot, Maxtor is releasing new drives with 80 GB platters. With larger platters, that should mean for faster drives.

And, in an example of the I-just-washed-my-car-and-now-it’s-raining effect, I just bought a new hard drive last week (it arrived yesterday). But, I don’t feel so bad, especially as it looks that Maxtor is decreasing its warranty from the industry-standard three-years down to one.

Some people in the Slashdot comments were dissing Maxtor, but I disagree. Sure, Maxtor was a budget drive-maker 7 to 10 years ago. But, they turned themselves around in the late-90s. I bought their first 7200 rpm IDE drive (a whopping 10.2 GB at the time) in 1999, and it has worked flawlessly ever since.

So, yeah, I’d buy Maxtor again. But, in this case — at least at the time I made the purchase — Western Digital offered superior performance.
