Mexican Restaurants?

My parents are coming to visit next weekend, and I thought I’d take them to a Mexican restaurant one evening. If you have one to recommend, I’d be interested in hearing about it.

Last time they visited, we went to El Fenix and we really enjoyed their food. Something along those lines (hopefully with free parking) would be great.

  1. Seconding Glorias. Also Mattito’s, Desperadoes on Greenville (x-street Yale or Dyer, I think), Mariano’s in the Olde Town center (Lovers & Greenville), or Matt’s Rancho Martinez at Abrams & LaVista in Lakewood.

There are too many local legends in this town to eat chain Mexican.

  2. it just occurred to me during the pleasant, quite late for work, morning shower. gloria’s is salvadorian food, but damn good. :) what i was originally referring to is mia’s on lemmon. brisket tacos mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

  3. Gloria’s is excellent, and there are locations all over the metroplex. One thing, though: their ambiance is hollow and sparse. The only separation between tables is large fake plants and the room echoes terribly (at least at the three different ones I’ve been to). It’s hard to carry on a good conversation here. The food, though, is fabulous.

  4. Gloria’s has Salvadorian and Mexican food both. What Leia said about the ambience is quite true, though (at least the Lemmon and Greenville locations). I’ll second Mariano’s as well. They have the best Salsa in town for my money. You may want to try La Calle Doce, which is on Skillman just North of Live Oak. They have some great Mexican Seafood (the Camarones a la plancha are great), but they also have normal Mexican food.

Whatever you do, stay away from that Cancun (or is it Acapulco? I forget) place on Greenville between Park and Northwest Highway. That place is some of the nastiest food I’ve ever had.
