Ben & Jerry’s Blueberry Splenda Ice Cream

I’m on vacation in South Africa celebrating my dad’s 60th birthday (returning on Saturday). I flew from Dallas to Atlanta and from there to Cape Town; and, as I walked from my incoming gate in Atlanta airport to my connecting gate, I passed by a Ben & Jerry’s. It was about 9am at the time, but I couldn’t resist a peek at their menu ;).

I looked around for any sugar free flavors as the last thing I really needed was full-sugar ice cream first thing in the morning. As I peered down the list of flavors, one of them had Splenda: blueberry. So, I ordered one scoop of blueberry and I ate it as I walked to my next gate.

I’ve had sugar-free ice cream before — though I’m not sure I’ve had Splenda-sweetened ice cream. And, while sugar-free ice cream is usually very close to the real thing, this was a disaster. It was as if it was all ice and no cream. As I plowed my plastic spoon into the ice cream, the ice cream merely broke off in chunks — like a rock face — rather than pulling apart like the creamy confection it should have been.

You might expect this sort of behavior from a fat-free ice cream, but that shouldn’t have been the case this time. I can only figure that it was over-frozen as even when I attempted to savor the ice cream, it merely disintegrated in my mouth like an ice cube rather than dissolving creamily. I’ve had Ben & Jerry’s ice cream before and it’s often very good (if over priced). So, it’s not that I’ve given up on Ben & Jerry’s, but I don't think I’ll have their sugar free varieties again any time soon.

  1. Hey, as long as you are there go to the “Steers” in Bloubergstrand, next door to the Dolphin Bay apartments. Best damn steak I ever had!

    And while you are in the area hoist a couple of castle at the “blue peter” up the road.

  2. Wow, I can’t believe that Vermont’s finest “all-natural” hippie ice cream is now making products containing something called Splenda!
    Have you ever seen any goat ice cream? I was thinking there’s goat cheese and goat yoghurt and goat caramel – but I have yet to see goat ice cream!

  3. I know this was posted awhile ago but I just came across it in a search. I have made homemade ice cream with splenda with the same results. It does not turn out as creamy as regular ice cream. I believe it is the chemical make up of the splenda that causes it to freeze too hard.

  4. you might want to give the blueberry ice cream another try. i just had some today (free cones for tsunami victim relief) and thought it was fabulous! they couldn’t tellme how many net carbs it had,so in searching the internet i came across your message. really, after reading your message i’m very nervous: either they lied and there are a ton of carbs in there or they have really improved the taste. it was VERY creamy –not at all icey.

  5. Hey there! I just ried this ice cream tonight and it was way creamy!!!I was even surprised! I think you were just unlucky that day and that the ice cream was not fresh and overfrozen… I have had fat-free ice cream and the texture is bad but this thing Splenda blueberry was great!

    Laloo’s icecream, I love goat milk but I hadn’t found any icecream until I stumbled upon Laloo’s, the chocolate was so creamy and good I would highly recomend it

  7. Some shops do not sell much of the sugar free variety and it can become old and full of ice crystals. If you get the stuff fresh, it is fabulous!

  8. In response to Charles question about is there Goat Ice Cream? Yes there is. The best tasting and creamiest ice cream I have ever eaten was “Strawberry Honey Goat Ice Cream”. I used to buy it from a health store in Sparta New Jersey when I lived there 29 years ago. If I remember correctly, the goat ice cream came from Pennsylvania Dutch country. I wonder if ice cream could be shipped from New Jersey to Florida in an insulated box with dry ice?
