Nickeback vs Nickleback Mashup

Preface: Mashups are an art form where someone superimposes one song on top of another to form a brand new song. Wired has a good article on the phenomenon.

I recently ran across the darndest thing: a mashup of Nickleback + Nickleback. The original MetaFilter thread was back in April, so maybe I’m a bit behind the curve on this one ;). But, there was a recent follow-up thread when NPR covered the mashup.

And, unlike most mashups, this one wasn't done as a tribute to the bands involved. Rather, a fellow named Mikey Smith wanted to show his girlfriend that all of Nickleback's songs sound just about the same. And, in particular “How You Remind Me” and “Someday” could be combined almost eerily (with one song in each channel).

And, while the original threads don’t have an MP3 handy of the now-christened “How You Remind Me Of Someday”, this guy at Nintendorks has the MP3 on his server (yeah, I could link to the MP3 directly, but I figure that I could at least link to his entry about it if he’s donating the bandwidth for it).

Really, this mashup just weirds me out [and trying to figure out how to un-end that sentence with a preposition almost made my head explode]. The songs plod along at the same pace, the drum solos come in almost one-after-the-other and the choruses are almost in sync as well. I didn't like Nickleback before — though I couldn’t put my finger on it — and now I think I've figured out at least of my reasons ;).

Removing IM Ads with AIM Ad Hack

I may be revealing my un-l33tness here, but I still stick with the stock AIM client. I have nothing against Trillian and the like but I’ve heard some anecdotes in the past about incompatibility with chat sessions and file transfers. (And, if all those issues are resolved the current version then, by all means, please let me know.)

But, to make things easier as/while I stick with AIM, I’ve found AIM Ad Hack which cleanly kills off all the ad windows in AIM. And unlike an amateur hack-and-slash job, this utility kills off the spyware / questionable software included with AIM and can also remove many of the extraneous interface buttons from the interface.

AIM Ad Hack has just hit v4.0 which would normally be quite a milestone for software (being a point-oh and all). And, I still recommend the download for anyone using the stock AIM client, but I’m not sure what major features warranted a “4.0” version :-/.

Update 2005-01-07: AIM Ad Hack has now been updated to v4.02.

Iron Chef America

There's a new Iron Chef in town. Well, three of them anyway :). The Food Network is starting a new Iron Chef series called Iron Chef America with Iron Chefs Wolfgang Puck, Mario Batali and Bobby Flay. No, this isn't the horrendous Iron Chef USA which aired on UPN (and starred William Shatner as the host). No, this one is completely different and, as far as I can tell, a good deal of fun.

This time around, Alton Brown takes on the commentator role and some Asian guy takes on the role of Chairman. According to the commercials, the show premiers on January 16 at 9/8c. However, they’ve already aired a few episodes. Or something. Over the weekend, they aired a couple episodes in a row where they paired the new Iron Chefs with some of their Japanese counterparts (Flay vs Sakai and and Puck vs Morimoto). As the episodes aired, the main titles identified it as “Iron Chef America: Battles of the Masters”. So, perhaps those were exhibition matches of some sort.

Overall, I quite enjoyed the show. I won’t spoil the secret ingredients of thosee twe episodes (in case you haven’t seen them yet) but I think the Flay/Sakai battle had a more adventurous ingredient. It threw them off a bit, at first, and that always makes the battles more interesting. However, the Puck/Morimoto battle had an ingredient that even I have in my kitchen; the two chefs had little trouble cooking with it and it wasn't much of a challenge for them.

Alton Brown as a commentator is both good and bad. He’s knowledgeable and charismatic but I get the feeling that he’s more accustomed to having a more scripted show (like his show, Good Eats). So, when it comes time for him to say things, he almost seems nervous about keeping the air full, as if having preventing dead air were his primary goal. And, in Alton's case, that unfortunately means plenty of vocalized pauses.

Common among amateur speakers — and a personal pet peeve of mine — vocalized pauses are those uhms and erms which some speakers use to fill the air between thoughts. From what I’ve read, it stems from an apprehension that any blank space would allow someone else to interrupt the speaker; of course, in the case of a television commentator (and most other situations where vocalized pauses arise), there is no one else who would be interrupting the speaker. I like Alton’s commentary, but I hope that’s one habit which he can shed.

Another interesting factor of the show — both for Iron Chef America and the original Iron Chef — is the celebrity judges. In the few episodes, the featured judges were mostly B-list celebrities (like that guy who played Gunther on Friends), though I don’t mean that in a bad way. However, the judges in this series were almost too lenient on the chefs. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m sure that any dish from these chefs would likely be stupendous, but if they only give complements then it makes it all the more difficult to taste the food vicariously. Good and bad parts aside, the show is still very young and I can’t wait for the next episodes.

MetaFilter on Hangover Remedies

Ah, just in time. MetaFilter has a thread today on hangover remedies. As mentioned in the FPP, the time-tested water & aspirin is a good standby (and it’s what I go with, though with ibuprofen in lieu of aspirin). And, as would be expected on MetaFilter, there’s a fair degree of snark with several suggestions to just keep drinking; but, there’re also some more useful comments in there.

One that caught my eye is N-Acetyl Cysteine, suggested by dws. N-Acetyl Cysteine, also known by its acronym “NAC”, is an over-the-counter supplement with a variety of uses, from treating an acetaminophen overdose to compensating for depressed levels of glutathione in AIDS patients. However, it apparently can also counteract hangovers:

Studies suggest that NAC, taken together with Vitamin C and B1 can be used to prevent and relief syptoms of veisalgia (hangover caused by alcohol). The primary detoxification mechanism for scavenging unmetabolized acetaldehyde (product of alcohol dehydrogenase) is sulfur-containing antioxidants. Cysteine and glutathione are active against acetaldehyde because they contain a reduced (unoxidized) form of sulfur called a sulfhydryl group, which contains a sulfur atom bonded to a hydrogen atom (abreviated SH). Another study indicates, that N-acetylcysteine generally regresses the oxidative damage induced by alcohol. […]

Of course, I’m guessing that all the usual stores which might carry NAC would be closed today; so, I’ll just have to buy some in time for next year. However, the Wikipedia page on Hangovers also mentions that NAC can be found to some extent in eggs — perhaps explaining why eggs are a component of many hangover folk remedies. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have an omelette to make (HHOS).

Most Ridiculous Black Metal Pics

Well, it looks like this MonkeyFilter thing is working out already :). A thread yesterday points to RuthlessReviews’ Top 10 Most Ridiculous Black Metal Pics of All Time. Being a metal fan myself, I can laugh along with some of these pictures. It’s not uncommon for metal artists to attempt to appear ghoulish or macabre — which sometimes comes across well — but sometimes just looks silly ;).

Really, I think the commentary accompanying the photos may be the best part:

  • “This is some serioulsy shoddy corpse-paint on everybody…”
  • “What exactly is going on here? Is this the new WWF tag-team? […]”
  • And, my personal favorite, “Wait, are those suspenders? […]”

And, while the commentary is often on-point, I would have preferred that the author didn’t use “gay” to mean “bad” or “stupid” (as one of the comments put it). That aside, I think the metal world sometimes takes itself too seriously and some self-deprecating humor can be just the antidote needed.
