Low Carb Doritos Coming in May

Well, we've just about seen it all now — low-carb beer, low-carb bread, low-carb cookies and now low-carb chips. Frito-Lay announced in a press release that they’ll be introducing low-carb Doritos and low-carb Tostitos in May. Known as Doritos Edge and Tostitos Edge, they’ll have 6g net carbs and 10g protein per bag (product packaging photo, nutrition label photo).

To create the new products, the company will use soy proteins and fiber to convert to a lower carbohydrate chip […]. This move will result in a 60 percent reduction of carbohydrates in both products.

Of all low-carb products, I think the introduction of low-carb bread made the most sense to me — after all, most people eat bread every day. But chips? Is there really a market for people who want to eat healthier yet eat chips on an everyday basis?

I do wonder how these chips will taste, though. Much like their low-fat counterparts, low-carb foods never seem to taste as good as the full-fat/high-carb versions. I suppose we’ll find out in May.

  1. I don’t know about the Doritos, but the Tostitos will be a big draw for me. I eat a lot of Mexican food, and tortilla chips that are low carb would mean I could actually *eat* them. Right now I have to order low-carb tortillas online for some insane price and make them myself in the oven. Think about all the low-carb toppings you could put on those things to make a meal out of them — fajita steak, cheese, black beans…. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.

  2. I think it is wonderful!! I am excited! They sell low carb chips and tortillas. A year ago when I started the diet you can find them at health food stores. They are a little more then reular chips and tortillas in price. Well worth it for us Atkins dieters that love Mexican food. A little off in taste though. You get used it to though. I just hope they taste better then all the rest of the low carb chips and totillas. I think they will sale wonderfully, I know a lot of people on the same diet as myself and desire more varities of food.
So I say thank you and I can’t wait!

  3. I live in Southeast Texas, and we’ve had these chips in Wal-Mart since the first of March! I’ve only tried the Nacho Cheese Doritos, and they taste GREAT! There’s just a very slight grittyness left in your mouth after eating them. But not nearly as bad as most low-carb chips. They also come in Cooler Ranch flavor, and Tostitos restraunt style.

  4. I have been on the Atkins lifestyle for 3 years. I started at a size 16 and I am proud to say the I am down to 4’s and 2’s. My favorite chip, well Doritos of course. So when I went by the chip aisle to admire them from afar I galnced at the Big 6 Grams on the bag of Doritos staring at me. I jumped so high in the air I frightened a couple of shoppers. When I showed them MY exciting find they were curious. So I let them in on my secret. The too, went home with a couple of bags. Thank you, Frito Lay!!!

  5. I just got word from my low carb buddies that you were discontinuing your Edge products. I am so shocked and disappointed about this news. We just love the chip products. There are no comparable products out there. Not to mention how delicious they are. Please continue this line and do more marketing and advertising with it. I know you will very positive results. I search for them in every store I go to but have only to find them at Walmart.

  6. OHMYGOSH!! DISCONTINUING?!?! These heavenly lo-carb chips have been my saving grace on the lo-carb lifestyle!! I can’t find them anywhere anymore…does that truly mean they are all gone?! I have lost 32 pounds in 6 months and owe so much of it to these kinds of “seemingly indulgant” items that are actually lo-carb. There is nothing else that even compares!
    Please say it isn’t so!!

  7. Please tell me that these aren’t being discontinued. I can’t find anything as good as these. Is there any change in the decision to discontinue these?

  8. Are the carb focus tortilla chips being discontinued at Wal-mart? I sure hope not! These chips are delicious as part of a low carb diet!! I have lost 105 pounds on the Atkins diet.

  9. Practically overnight, Wal Mart no longer had *any* brand of low carb tortilla chips anymore. I am surprised they felt these didn’t have a market. They couldn’t keep them stocked at our local store. I can’t find a thing to replace them now :(

  10. This is 2005 so please return the variety of Carb Focus Tortilla Chips to the shelves of Wal-Mart. They are wonderful and can be used in a variety of ways. The flaxseed and black bean flavored ones are great. Please advise a site to order them if one is available…..Thank You, L. Hearn

  11. I have not been able to find the Carb Focus chips at any of the local Wal-mart stores in my area anymore…WHAT HAPPENED? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BRING THEM BACK!!

  12. I am so disappointed that the Carb Focus chips are no longer available. They were so delicious. If they had been placed with the other chips they would have been more readily available. Please bring these wonderful chips back or let me know where I can find them.

  13. It’s a sad day for low carb dieters. I don’t think Frito-Lay gave the trial period a long enough time. Just like everything else, I think it all comes down to the bottom line of “making money”. I really liked the Dorito Edge Chips and I’m sad that Frito-Lay stopped putting them in stores. But, I myself, don’t think the Frito-Lay company cares if the Dorito Edge chips were good and were one of the best low carb chips around, they just weren’t making enough money on the product. I do hope that the Dorito Edge chips will be available in stores again soon, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

  14. Help ! Why doesn’t WalMart carry the low carb Doritos any longer? My husband is on the Adkins Diet and those are the only salty snack he could have that he really enjoyed. Please Please bring them back.

  15. I understand the Edge chips will be launched nationwide in May (according to a news release). I was disappointed when they disappeared from our stores locally, but it must have just been market testing since it was hit or miss finding them. I really like the chips (all three kinds). The cheese puffs weren’t quite as good in my opinion.

  16. Are the Edge chips really gone? Come on Wal-Mart and Frito Lay! To a chip lover on South Beach life plan, they were the bomb! Help us out! MA

  17. I LUV these potato chips but lately I can’t seem to find them at ANY Wal-Mart so I am hoping/praying they, too, have not been discontinued:( They are yummier than regular chips to me and now I can’t feed my “addiction”! Help!! Where did they suddenly go?? Does anyone know?

  18. I don’t understand why Walmart won’t carry their own brand(Carb Focus) of low carb chips! They sell out of all of these plus the Edge brand! Doesn’t make sense to me, these are great chips for those of us who are on these diets!
I guess we will all have to bombard Walmart & Lays with letters! What a shame!

  19. I just called Frito-lay (1-800-352-4477) and they confirmed low-carb Doritos were in fact discontinued January 1, 2005 due to poor sales and poor taste reviews. The spokesperson said they might come out with a reformulated product but she made it clear the company lost money on the product.

This is horrible and I’m so sad to find out that Atkins-friendly Doritos are definitely gone. I went from 242 to 194 pounds and I was incredibly excited when I found out low-carb Doritos existed. The Atkins Cruchables chips taste HORRIBLE (chew them and they turned into powder) and Doritos Edge were far better. Are there any other alternatives? If so, I don’t know of any.

  20. Some good news for some, our Super Walmart in Raleigh, NC just got a full shipment of the Guacamole Carb Focus Tortilla chips, I saw them on the shelf this past weekend, but I’m still disappointed I can’t find the Black Bean and Sour Cream chips. Hopefully they’ll get those next.

  21. I was able to purchase doritos edge a few months ago now all the stores I shop at do not have them I understand after talking to a vendor of your products they are stopping distribution .Iam very appalled at this if your product did not sell it was because of placement in local establishments, I really do not think iti is fair to us lo carb dieters even in a healthy aspect to find the products we need to achieve our goals .The least you can do is make it available on line for purchase. discriminatory againt dieters thats what u people are!

  22. I am living a low carb lifestyle and found that the Edge products were delicious and so helpful in staying low carb. PLEASE bring them back.

  23. I love the Carb Focus Chips. When I was at Wal-mart I asked the sales person if they had the Carb Focus Chips. He said, yes, we have a whole case in the back room. Needless to say, I bought them all. PLEASE BRING THESE BACK. I’m down to my last bag.

  24. I used to buy the doritos low carb chips all the time…I think they were called EDGE or something. They had cheetos too. I can’t find them any where. They were awesome! Escpecially when you are craving chips! I’m irritated I can’t find them! What happened? Been watching carbs for 1 yr. 3 mo. Please bring them back!!!!!!!!!!

  25. BRING BACK THE EDGE CHIPS! I *loved* them! None of my local stores carried them (not even my Walmart), so I would drive 35 miles to the nearest store that did have them, and then I would buy all they had in stock. lol!
If distribution/stocking was the problem, why not offer them online for purchase? Increase the price–we’ll pay!

  26. Ridiculous Redux

While searching around for procedures to migrate an MT installation to a new server, I came across this nice guy Alex and his blog. Well, he seems nice, I figure anyone who keeps a blog up to date, can’t be…

  27. IMPORTANT! Does anyone know who to contact about bringing the flax carb-focus (or ANY flavor for that matter) back to wal-mart. Wal-mart being the distributor, but WHO actually MAKES them??? I have dropped 40 because I had that “cRunCH!” THey were absoulutely scrumptious. I used them at parties during the holiday and they were the MOST popular item! Who knew flax could be so good??? With that nutty flavor!!! AGGGGGHHHHH!

  28. I JUST CALLED:

    To reach the Contact Center of Wal-Mart Stores, call 1-800-WALMART (1-800-925-6278), from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. (CT) Monday – Friday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (CT) Saturday or from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. (CT) Sunday

Call! Enough of us can make a difference :)

  29. I LOVE Doritos EDGE. I lost ALL my baby weight and more . I am SO sad that they were discontinued PLEASE bring them back.

  30. I also miss Walmart handling Doritos Edge chips. I personally contacted Frito-Lay and was advised they are permanently discontinuing the product for lack of sales. What’s up! The stores could not keep them on the shelves. Let’s get them back.

  31. I stumbled across this site during a google search and thought I’d add my two cents about the Edge chips.

I, too, was extremely disappointed to learn that they had been discontinued— especially since I had only discovered them just a few weeks before they were removed from Frito-Lay’s product offerings. I called Frito-Lay and was told much the same story as everyone else, i.e., that they hadn’t sold as well as expected. This was not surprising, since I never even saw an ad or a sales promotion.

I thought they were the best-tasting and best-textured low-carb chips ever offered. Had I known they were to be discontinued, I would have gone to every store in my area and bought out every bag.

  32. Please bring back the low carb chips and cheetos. We bought them regularly and seen other people buying as well. They were delicious and I really think you could make a good profit since they would be the only ones on the market. PLEASE BRING THEM BACK!

  33. I loved the Doritos Edge chips, and the Cheetos Edge! The were the best low carb chips I have ever tried. I never got to try the Tostitos, but would love the opportunity. Please please Frito Lay bring them back!!!

  34. Oh, how dissapointing that they were discontinued. One of the worst things about low-carb diets is that there are very few crunchy things that you can eat, except raw vegetables (gross).

  35. I can’t believe frito lay lost money on edge chips . They couldn’t even keep them in stock on the shelves . Is this just frito lays way of taking more money out of our pockets? I’ve seen fritolay product marked way down related to product expiration I bet you never saw that with edge chips. Food for thought

  36. I can’t believe Frito Lay lost money on the Edge chips either! None of the stores in my area could keep them on the shelves. I would have to buy up all that was there in order to get any. My favorite was the Tostito’s and I find it absolutely impossible to believe that they weren’t worth keeping on the market. I am one of many people I know that would love to see them come back!

  37. I am so disappointed about Edge chips being discontinues. All my friends used them. We had a joke about who could get them off Wal-Mart shelves first. In this day of so much low carb dieting, why discontinue these chips. I never even looked at the price. That is how important they were to me. I also like Carb Focus but I no longer can find them. What is up!!

  38. I too stumbled across this website in search for the Carb Focus chips. I can’t believe they are no longer available. How can something that Wal-Mart couldn’t keep stocked be discontinued?!?!? It is so hard to find a tasty low carb product that is reasonably priced. I don’t think Wal-Mart gave them a fighting chance. I had just told my mother about them. She saw how much weight I have lost and decided to do the same. But the chips were no where to be found by that time. Please bring them back!!! :(

  39. I was hoping I could order some of the Carb Focus
chips online or find a store that carried them,
because I loved those chips ,
but to my dismay you discontinued them. When are
you going to bring them back? Please bring Carb
Focus chips or something simular back soon.Could
you please let me know how soon I can expect
    them back on the shelf?

  40. Edge chips flew off the shelves here in my city, so I simply don’t believe Frito-Lay’s story about them not being cost effective. Atkins discontinued one of their very best, lowest carb candy bar which tasted like a PayDay, Rep told me nobody bought them- yeah right! They too flew off the shelf at my store. Whatever they are doing, they are not in touch with their consumers.

  41. Do you think the problem with Frito-Lay Edge products was that the stores were not putting them on the shelves? Maybe the stores decided they didn’t have room for 1 more low carb product. Especially if they carried a similar one of their own.

  42. Does anyone have an update on these carbfocus or Frito-Lay chips. It seems from this blog from every area of the country these chips were selling. I even have a picture of two young kids aged 3 and 4 scarfing down the Carb Focus chips. I MISS these snacks, I am a salty food junky and chips are my very weakness.

  43. I loved the edge chips, they were almost always out of stock in my store……. then a friend found the carb focus at her walmart and we’d eat a bag a week in my house. even the kids on a regular diet loved the guacomole ones. what happend? why did walmart quit selling and why can’t we find anything on-line for buying them? I sent an email to walmart customer service on-line today.

  44. I too am searching for Edge Doritos/Tostitos. They were delicious! I can’t find any types of low carb tortilla chips now. What happened? I need my “crunchies”.

  45. Looking for low-carb chips. Wal-Mart’s Carb Focus was my favorite. Just tried to purchase them on-line and found this link this instead. Didn’t even know they were made by Wal-Mart til now.

  46. I don’t think Walmart was ‘making’ the carb focus, just selling them…we need to find who was making them. Walmart has no manufacturing capability. Does anyone still have a bag, maybe there is an address or the bag?

  47. I just got off the phoene with WalMart headquarters in AK, they are discontinuing the chips. They flew off the shelves here as fast as they put them out, but were HORRIBLE about stocking them at the local stores.

My suggestion is to bombard the home office with requests…there is no address on the bag. The UPC code is 8113177983. Prepare for a wait on the phone. It took three tries and twenty minutes on hold as their “valued customer” to get through to someone.

    Give them a call.
