SS American Star – Ghost Ship

The SS American Star was grounded off the west coast of Fuerteventura in 1994, and has been rotting there since. I wasn’t sure what to expect at the site, but it’s a surreal view of a deteriorating corpse of a ship.

The pictures fascinate me, but I just don’t know why. Perhaps it’s the nature of destruction that wouldn’t normally be seen with a ship that size (somewhat like the curiosity in seeing the Enterprise crash-landed into a planet, I suppose).

  1. Hi everyone, i run a 4×4 tours trip to the SS America, i prefer to call the ship by her once pround name and not the rusting wreck she now is. I have a WW2 dodge weapons carrier and take tourist out to the wreck from hotels in caleta and corralejo.
I have history with this ship because my father sailed on her during his war service, when she was the Westpoint.

I have been aboard the ship recently(july 04) and can tell you she is in a bad way, not got too much longer left.
Anyone wanting pics, just email me.

    regards
    laurie

  2. I find the pics quite interesting. The wreck photos are a real testament to how strong she is. It won’t be long till she goes, though.

  3. please i want to ask you if you can give some information for where i can get information about

a small ship the person put it in his hand
and this ship contains information about this person
i will thanks you if you answere me

  4. I like the pictures very much. I would like to know if anyone has pictures taken after August 2004, especially after January 1, 2005. I am sure the winter has not been kind to the wreck.

  5. can u please email me or give me a website on the history of the s.s. american star ! ? me and my grandad are very fasinated since we have been there

  6. You can see the wreck of the ss American Star, if
you go to Google, and their Maps section (satellite), if you have a map of the island or know where the Playa de garcey is.
You can zoom right in to the beach and see the wreck.

  7. my name is James Am star i am doing the research on the American star it looks like the Titanic all over again but she didnt sank in the sea she did broken in 2 but strein is on the bottom of the sea its a fram 65 i want everyone to know that ship is going to collaps and roll over and sank with my luck the strom that hit and waves will take the ship to the bottom of the sea.

  8. Anyone interested in this wreck, please contact me for details etc, also i have vast collection of photos from both outside and inside the wreck and underwater photos of the rear stern section. I do 4×4 tours to the shipwreck and have colected a huge amount of artefacts from the ship, including rare items that have been stored on the island since she was wrecked.
The ship lies on the rocks of Playa De Garcy, which is arrived at along a very rocky and rough dirt track road, and passing through a military training ground for the Spanish Army. The ship was used as target practise at one point, but not any more!
The future of the wreck is unsure at this moment, the sea and elements are taking its toll and the interior of the ship is deteriorating quite rapidly now. There has been much written about this ship and its history and considering the absolute amazement that you see on peoples faces when they see this wreck for the first time, its surprising that more of it isnt known.
There is a new AA Travel guide to the island being published in January 06, and several of my photographs are included in this along with a reference to my tours.
Anyone wanting information etc on the ss America(I prefer to call the ship by her proper name) then please contact me.
    regards
    laurie

  10. this message is for laurie ive been dooin a lot of research on the ship lately and was wonderind if u could send the photos you are talkin about of the wreck both inside and out i would of e mailed you direct but i cannot see a e mail addy in your post mine is dialll911@comcast.net thanks in advance

  11. The ship has deteriorated substantially in the past few months, the aft funnel has fallen into the sea along with a good portion of hull, and what remains now has a very severe list to port. By the end of 2006 there likely won’t be much left to see at all. I would think going aboard in any capacity would now be impossible in terms of safety. Pics of the wreck as of Nov. 2005 here: http://www.ss-australis.com/latestwreck.htm

  12. If any one has any recent photo’s of the SS.American star I could use on my website I would be pleased to use them as mine where taken in july 2005 and they are so out of date now I hope to be going back soon but in the mean time any I can use would be appreciated. sue.riley1@tiscali.co.uk

  13. message for laurie, i would be very interested in you internal and external photos of the american star, i have just returned fron it in oct 06 and i cant believe the deterioration in just 12 months, thanks, my email address is my name (nick cooke) 123 at msn.com

  14. in the name of decency, why doesn’t the US government or whatever agency appointed to handle such, either BLOW-UP or TOW OUT TO SEA and SCUTTLE this pitiful ship——once named the “WESTPOINT” (in re “the finest” etc.).
hey……..if the horse can’t run, they shoot it; if the human can’t perform job, they retire him; this ship is a monument to UGLINESS, DECLINE, WASTE (since salvagers evidently aren’t interested)!! It’s like looking into a desecrated grave and photographing a rotting body.

  15. What a fascinating ship wreck! I really wish I could have visited it, unfortunately, its now almost all gone as of May 2007. I saw some recent pictures and all thats left is the very tip of the bow. The deck has completely washed away as well. Its all very sad, too bad she couldn’t be preserved. The SS United States is on the road to restoration, its a shame SS America could not have joined her.

  16. PS This is a comment for “LAURIE”. what will you take visitors to see when the wreck is no longer there? Or will there akways be some of ut still visible?

  17. Laurie,
I just discovered about the history of this majestic ship and I find it quite interesting, too bad I wasn’t able to see it before it finally went down.
Do you have any pictures of what it looked like from the inside when you went on board back in 2004? if possible please email them to:
    renedegre@yahoo.com
Close up photos of the outside would also be appreciated.
    Thank you and regards!

    Rene
